Sleek, Contoured Upper Arms with an Arm Lift in Milwaukee

Imagine wearing sleeveless shirts, dresses, and swimsuits without constantly thinking about the appearance of your upper arms. This feels like a small accomplishment for individuals who have smooth and firm skin on their arms, but for patients who developed loose tissue with age or after significant weight loss, the freedom to wear what you want without second-guessing your appearance is powerful. At Parkins Plastic Surgery, we love seeing patients transform into the most confident versions of themselves after an arm lift (brachioplasty) surgery.

Schedule your consultation for an arm lift in Milwaukee or Madison with Dr. Maida Parkins to learn more about how this treatment can help you feel more comfortable with your appearance.

The Benefits of an Arm Lift

This procedure provides many advantages for patients in terms of wellbeing and body image. After treatment, patients enjoy the following:

  • Improved body contours
  • Removal of loose, drooping skin
  • Personal freedom and confidence to wear all clothing styles
  • No more need to find cover-ups for upper arms

Treatment comes with a high rate of satisfaction, and patients find the surgery and recovery process to be easily managed. With help from Dr. Parkins, you don’t have to spend another summer season trying to uncomfortably cover parts of your body that cause you to feel anxious or self-conscious.

Who is Qualified for an Arm Lift?

If you’re considering an arm lift, you should be in good general health and close to your ideal weight. Patients who are still progressing on their weight loss journey, and who expect to lose a notable number of additional pounds, should wait to pursue arm contouring surgery until after their goals have been reached; additional weight loss can produce more loose skin.

Dr. Parkins recommends an arm lift for patients who have noticed loose and wobbly skin develop on the upper arms from natural aging, where tissue loses its youthful elasticity and firmness. Treatment is also ideal as a part of a body contouring plan for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are now experiencing lack of tissue volume in multiple areas of the body.

Even if you’ve always had larger arms compared to the rest of your body contours, brachioplasty can provide the sleek and beautiful results you’re looking for. If this applies to you, Dr. Parkins can also recommend liposuction to remove stubborn deposits of fat from the upper arm area.

Your Arm Lift Procedure in Milwaukee and Madison

To comfortably complete treatment, patients are placed under general anesthesia. Parkins Plastic Surgery’s offices are equipped with state-of-the-art on-site operating facilities, and anesthesia is administered by trained and licensed professionals who are committed to your wellbeing. Your safety and comfort are our highest priorities.

Dr. Parkins then places an incision down the underside of the upper arm, spanning from the elbow to the armpit. This allows her to precisely remove excess skin and tighten tissue to create the ideal contours. Depending on what was discussed during your plastic surgery consultation, liposuction may also be utilized to create the desired outcome. To support lasting, beautiful results, Dr. Parkins adjusts the underlying tissue structure as well.

The incision is closed with fine sutures and drains are not needed. Patients are then moved into our comfortable recovery room to awaken from the anesthesia. Patients can return home the same day as their procedure; overnight hospital stays are not necessary after an arm lift.

Recovering from an Arm Lift

Patients find the recuperation process to be highly comfortable. As the treatment is mostly intended to remove loose skin, rather than affect muscle position, patients find resulting side effects, such as tenderness, bruising, and swelling to be tolerable. When you are released home under the care of a loved one or an in-home nurse, you should have a recovery area and filled prescriptions waiting for you upon your return – this ensures you are as comfortable as possible and can rest without worrying about errands.

The first few days after your procedure, you will feel tired and sore, and will spend most of your time resting. Dr. Parkins provides complete instructions so you know what to expect, including limiting physical activity, wearing compression garments, and how long swelling is expected to last.

Frequently Asked Questions about Arm Lift

Will I Have a Scar?

The only way to effectively remove loose skin is to place an incision in the treatment area. An arm lift (brachioplasty) does create a scar, but with Dr. Parkins’ attention to detail and your commitment to at-home care post-surgery, your scar will be as faint as possible. While patients are hesitant about scars, this does not prevent them from enjoying the results of their surgery.

Do I Need an Arm Lift or Liposuction?

Patients interested in an arm lift often need both, but these treatments are designed to achieve two different results; an arm lift removes excess skin on the upper arms, and liposuction is a fat removal procedure. Dr. Parkins recommends liposuction alone if patients’ skin is elastic and a large amount of fat does not need to be removed; liposuction by itself can create loose skin in the area. Patients who have both excess skin and fat will need a traditional arm lift procedure to achieve their ideal results. In many cases, fat removal will not create the firmness and contour patients are looking for.

Is there a non-surgical option for tightening arm skin?

There are some laser and radiofrequency procedures used in aesthetic medicine that can firm and tighten the soft tissue. While this may work in cases of truly mild skin laxity, only a surgical procedure removes the moderate to severe loose skin that comes after extreme weight loss. Patients averse to surgical procedures need to carefully evaluate their goals and expectations. If they are hesitant to have a scar, surgical treatment may not be right for them. Exercise can help tone the upper arms, but surgery is necessary for removal of significant loose skin in the area; there is no pill or cream that can mimic the results of skin removal surgery.

Can I Have a Minimal Incision Arm Lift?

There are ways to minimize the incision and help conceal the scar in the pit of the arm; however, this is not a method that will work for everyone. A less extensive procedure compared to a traditional arm lift is recommended for less extreme cases of drooping arm skin. It’s important to note that if the extent of your concerns is severe, the more predictable and satisfying way to alleviate loose skin is with an incision that extends from the armpit to the elbow.
