Changing breast appearance, whether lifting, augmenting, or decreasing size takes the care and attention of a compassionate surgeon. Dr. Parkins finds the most satisfying part of treatment to be the look of happiness on patients’ faces when their results are revealed. Removing an implant should leave you looking and feeling more like yourself, which is exactly what Dr. Parkins strives for in every treatment plan.
During your initial consultation, you can discuss what you’re hoping to achieve with the removal of your silicone or saline implants. Dr. Parkins explains whether any additional procedures are necessary to ensure your new look is what you imagined. Extra procedures added to explant surgery are:
- Breast lift
- Fat grafting
- Placement of new or different style implants
In some cases, a breast implant removal is enough to make patients happy with their appearance. Others have had implants for a long enough time that they are dissatisfied with their natural aesthetic; we want to avoid this by providing thorough consultations and procedure information. If you have saline implants, Dr. Parkins can even drain some of the liquid filling the implant prior to surgery so you have an idea of what you’ll look like with smaller breasts.

What Happens During Implant Removal Surgery?
To remove your breast implants, Dr. Parkins places an incision along the previous scar to avoid additional and unnecessary markings. Patients who have saline implants can have them drained of the saline filling before the implant shells are removed, which allows for comparatively smaller incisions.
At this time, Dr. Parkins can also perform a breast lift; this may require the placement of additional incisions. A lollipop lift involves an incision around the areola and down toward the bottom of the breast. If a significant amount of loose tissue is present, Dr. Parkins may perform the anchor pattern lift. Ask about your options and needs during your consultation.
Patients who want their previous implants swapped for a new variety or shape can have their implants placed immediately after their current implants are taken out. If you have decided on enhancing breast volume in a more natural way, your surgery may include fat grafting to the breasts. This is performed in the same surgery as well.
Frequently Asked Questions about Implant Removal Surgery
Will My Breasts Droop?
Breasts return to their natural shape and position after implants are taken out. If you had your implants for many years or your chosen implants were quite large, you may notice that your breasts appear droopier than you had imagined. However, some patients do not mind this, especially if they sought treatment to minimize the too-high and large appearance of their former implants. If you are worried about breast sagging after your procedure, please be sure to ask Dr. Parkins what you can expect during your consultation.
Do I Need a Lift at the Same Time?
Picking the right treatments is highly dependent upon your preferences. Explant procedures do not include a breast lift by default. Dr. Parkins often recommends a lift for patients who are having their implants removed in their senior years, as the skin will have stretched with age and with long-term use of implants. Patients who have lost weight over the years may also require a lift to excise extra tissue. The best way to determine which surgical methods are right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Parkins and her team.
How Soon after Implant Placement can I have them Removed?
Breast augmentation can make some patients anxious about their results. Immediately after the procedures, breasts will be swollen, and the implants may be sitting high on the chest. This can make patients concerned about whether they will look unnatural. It’s important to give your implants plenty of time to heal, settle, and drop into place for the ideal aesthetic. Patients should wait anywhere between six to 12 months before deciding whether they are truly unhappy with their decision and would like their implants removed.
If I Have Capsular Contracture, Do I Need to Have my Implants Taken Out?
Capsular contracture does not necessarily present immediate concerns; if you don’t like the look of your implants with capsular contracture or if the condition has become painful, you should consider surgery. There are other ways to soothe capsular contracture without surgery, but it may be necessary if the condition progresses. Capsular contracture will not simply resolve without attention from a physician.
