What Makes a Good Labiaplasty Candidate?

For such a small part of the body, the appearance of vaginal tissues can have a significant positive or negative effect on how you feel. Patients with enlarged labia minora or majora that developed naturally or that occurred after pregnancy often feel embarrassed during sexual activity. Excess tissue can also cause an embarrassing and revealing bulge in tight-fitting clothing, such as yoga pants and bathing suits. Understanding your BMI before your consultation will help determine your eligibility for surgery.

Women who want to address the look of their labia are encouraged to call Parkins Plastic Surgery to arrange a consultation. Through conversation and an examination, Dr. Maida Parkins’ and Dr. Lucas Boehms goal is to ensure that every woman who chooses surgery does so for herself after coming to a thorough understanding of the procedure and what it can do.

Personalized Labiaplasty Consultations for Milwaukee and Madison

Our surgeons serve as both a confidante and educator during patient consultations. They want everyone who visits them to receive dedicated attention and to have all the information they need to decide on their treatment plan.

If you are nervous about a labiaplasty, Dr. Parkins and Dr. Boehm can offer detailed information about the procedure and after-care. Understanding what the surgery is for, what it can and can’t do, and what to expect after can improve confidence and the overall patient experience.

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

The advantages of cosmetic treatment to reduce the size of enlarged labial tissue include:

Quick Recovery With Minimal Downtime

You don’t have to take much time away from your daily life to achieve the labiaplasty results you want.

Improved Feelings of Self Esteem

With enlarged tissue, it’s hard to feel good in—and out of—clothing. A labiaplasty reshapes this delicate area of the body to create improved contours.

Preserved Sensation

The goal with treatment is to reduce the size of tissue, not to interfere with nerves and sensitive areas. That means renewed intimacy can feel as good as it did before the surgery.

Enhance Symmetry

For some patients, the labia minora are different lengths or extend past the labia majora, creating an uneven aesthetic. Treatment creates improved balance between the two.

Patients’ responses to their results are overwhelmingly positive. Many women love the way they look and feel a renewed sense of self-esteem following their labiaplasty.

What Does a Labiaplasty Involve?

Patients are often surprised to learn that a labiaplasty treatment only takes about an hour and a half to complete. In most case, a local anesthetic—not the general anesthesia you may typically associate with surgery—is all that is needed for comfort. Discreet incisions and dissolvable stitches make this procedure even more convenient. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, and because it involves local anesthesia, patients do not need a companion to take them to and from their appointment. For patients who feel somewhat anxious, a prescription can be written for a medication to help you relax prior to the procedure. In this case, you would need a driver to take you home.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

The clitoral hood is the skin folds that cover the clitoris, protecting it from overstimulation and irritation. It also produces a lubricant to help it move smoothly over the clitoris. Some women have excess clitoral hood skin that can increase irritation and decrease clitoral sensation. This is where a clitoral hood reduction can help.

While not every patient is a candidate for a clitoral hood reduction, this procedure is often paired with a labiaplasty, and can reduce irritation and improve the appearance of your genitalia. A clitoral hood reduction won’t increase sensitivity on its own, it can enhance sexual pleasure by reducing the excess tissue adjacent to the clitoris.

During your procedure, your surgeon will use one of two methods to provide aesthetic improvement:

The Trim Method

An incision is placed along the edge of the targeted tissue to reduce the size of the labia. If you have tissue in this area that is causing embarrassment due to its coloring, the trim technique can alleviate this concern.

Wedge Resection

To resolve asymmetry and reduce excess tissue in the middle of the labia, the wedge surgical technique is recommended. Compared to the trim method, this labiaplasty technique does not involve the edges of the tissue. Instead, your surgeon places the necessary incisions in the contours of the labia themselves.

Both techniques produce scars that are well hidden and are not obvious either to patients or to others. Stitches placed during surgery dissolve on their own and are placed beneath the skin for the most comfortable recovery possible.

Please discuss the day of surgery with your surgeon if you have any concerns regarding what to expect.

Renuvion Skin Tightening

Renuvion is a medical device that utilizes a combination of radio frequency energy and helium plasma to selectively tighten the connective tissues between our skin and the deeper soft tissues. The contraction of this connective tissue improves skin retraction and redraping following liposuction procedures. The addition of this technology to our practice has allowed Dr. Maida Parkins and Dr. Lucas Boehm to improve upon their already exceptional body contouring results. Renuvion can be used to tighten mild to moderate amounts of extra, sagging skin on the labia majora and/or minora.

Recovery After Labiaplasty

Recuperating from a labiaplasty does not disrupt your daily life like more complex surgical procedures can. Patients are advised to rest after treatment and to very carefully clean the site, per your surgeons instructions. While bruising and swelling are to be expected, most patients only need a few days’ worth of rest at home before returning to work that is not physically demanding.

To maximize comfort during recovery, take medication as prescribed by your surgeon and follow instructions for easing your way back into physical activity. To protect the treatment site, avoid intercourse for six weeks after your treatment.

What Sets Our Surgeons Apart for Labiaplasty Surgery?

He believes that a collaborative, bespoke approach to aesthetic surgery is key to achieving consistently beautiful results and happy patients. At our boutique practice, you can expect individualized attention that meets your expectations for the highest quality of care.

Our surgeons listen attentively and helps patients feel comfortable with their choice to seek treatment. After an examination to determine the extent of excess tissue, they can recommend the ideal way to create your desired appearance.

FAQS About Labiaplasty

Will My Treatment Be Comfortable?

It’s common to be sore after your procedure, but patients typically do not experience any significant discomfort related to labiaplasty. During the surgery, we work to make you highly comfortable. You will also have the necessary medication to ensure that the first few days of rest after the procedure are manageable. Since only soft tissue—not muscle—is affected, recovery after labiaplasty is well tolerated.

Does Labiaplasty Improve Function?

Minimizing labia tissue is a cosmetic procedure and does not resolve issues such as dryness or incontinence. If you experience these particular concerns, you may want to consider a nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation procedure, also offered at Parkins Plastic Surgery.

I Won’t Lose Sensation, But Will Sensation Improve?

While it is not the goal of labiaplasty to enhance sexual sensation, some patients do find this to be a welcome side effect. Minimizing excess tissue can provide less interference with clitoral stimulation, which indirectly enhances sensation. To improve internal sensation, you can consider a nonsurgical rejuvenation treatment.

Are There Complications Associated with Labiaplasty?

Dr. Parkins and Dr. Boehm have years of experience providing labiaplasty and makes every effort to protect patients’ wellness and health. They can also revise a previously performed labiaplasty if you are not satisfied with the outcome. If you have concerns about specific potential complications, we welcome you to discuss your thoughts openly with our team. We are committed to your safety and to meeting your expectations for care.

Procedures and Treatments to Complement Labiaplasty

Women who choose labiaplasty to address changes caused by vaginal childbirth may also want to consider other procedures intended for helping mothers regain the look and feel of pre-baby body contours. Breast augmentation, breast lifts, and breast reduction can help undo the effects of nursing, while liposuction or a tummy tuck can take care of stubborn fat and excess skin, respectively.

All of these procedures—and more—can be combined into a personalized package known as a Mommy Makeover.
