Introduction

Achieve a More Youthful Look with Eyelid Rejuvenation Surgery at the Milwaukee and Madison Area’s Parkins Plastic Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can help improve the appearance of your eyelids by removing excess skin from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Maida Parkins is highly experienced in this cosmetic surgery, also known as eyelid surgery. Milwaukee and Madison-area patients choose her at Parkins Plastic Surgery so they can enjoy a more youthful and naturally rested appearance.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

The skin surrounding our eyes is thin and delicate and is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. This is a common source of frustration, as it can make you look older and more tired than you feel. Some of the common changes that occur around the eyes with age include:

A woman with short, gray hair is looking at her reflection in a mirror. She is wearing a white bathrobe. She is touching her face, and her expression appears somewhat concerned or pensive. The lighting in the bathroom is bright and neutral. The background is a light gray/white bathroom wall. The reflection in the mirror shows a similar-aged woman with a similar expression. - Eyelid Surgery in Oconomowoc, WI

Wrinkles and Fine Lines

The skin around the eyes is prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet) and on the eyelids.

Excess Skin Under the Eyes

If you have excess skin under your eyes, it can be removed with a simple surgery.

Sagging Eyelids

The skin on the upper eyelids can become loose and sag, sometimes to the extent that it obstructs vision.

Hollowing

The volume loss that occurs with aging can lead to hollowing around the eye, creating a sunken appearance.

A youthful face is full and lacks harsh transitions between the eyes and cheeks. Dr. Parkins is careful to remove excess skin when necessary during blepharoplasty surgery, but believes it is equally as important to restore volume to areas of the face that have lost it. This allows for the restoration of youthful contour to your face.

Introduction

What Makes a Good Blepharoplasty Candidate?

  • One of the primary reasons people undergo eyelid surgery is to remove excess skin on their eyelids, which can make the eyes appear tired, droopy, or hooded. If you have excess skin that affects your vision and makes you look older than you feel, you may be a good candidate for a blepharoplasty.

  • As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to be in good general health to minimize the risk of complications after blepharoplasty. If you have a chronic health condition, such as poorly controlled diabetes or high blood pressure, you may not be a good candidate for blepharoplasty surgery. Dr. Parkins will evaluate your health history and current health status to determine whether you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery.

  • It is important to have realistic expectations about the results of eyelid surgery. While the procedure can improve the appearance of the eyes and create a more youthful and rested appearance, blepharoplasty won’t completely change the overall appearance of your face. Dr. Parkins and her team will help you set realistic expectations for the results of the upper lid blepharoplasty procedure.

  • If you have under-eye bags or puffy lower eyelids that do not improve with lifestyle changes—such as getting enough sleep or reducing salt intake—you may be a good candidate for lower eyelid surgery. The blepharoplasty procedure can tighten the skin in the lower eyelids, smoothing out the area and creating a more youthful appearance.

  • If you have pre-existing eye conditions, such as dry eyes, glaucoma, or a history of a detached retina, you may not be a good candidate for a blepharoplasty.

step

What is the First Step?

Getting started with eyelid surgery in the Milwaukee and Madison area is straightforward and seamless. You will attend a private consultation with Dr. Parkins and her team, during which all your questions will be answered and you will undergo a physical and medical evaluation. The doctor will make sure you have a realistic understanding of the risks, benefits, costs, recovery time, and results connected with blepharoplasty.

Once Dr. Parkins has approved your candidacy, we will book your surgery date and provide you with instructions on how to best prepare for surgery. You may need to discontinue certain medications and supplements that might increase your risk of bleeding, bruising, and swelling. Additionally, you should fill any prescriptions ahead of time and schedule a helper to drive you home after your procedure.

recovery

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

We recommend that patients plan to take a week away from work and strenuous activity to give themselves plenty of time to rest and heal after blepharoplasty surgery. For some patients, it may be necessary to take up to two weeks off from work to ensure proper recovery. After this time, most bruising and swelling will have dissipated, and blepharoplasty patients feel more confident going out in public. Since the eye area is sensitive, patients may notice that swelling persists longer than they may have experienced with procedures performed elsewhere on the body.

Understanding what to expect during your blepharoplasty recovery makes the entire process a much more positive experience. Please be sure to bring all questions regarding healing and recovery to your blepharoplasty consultation with Dr. Parkins.
