Liposuction

Get Rid of Unwanted Fat with the Milwaukee and Madison Area’s Dr. Maida Parkins

Liposuction has been used as body-contouring surgery for decades and remains one of the most sought-after procedures to create the physique patients are looking for. Because treatment requires only small incisions and recovery is manageable, patients often request liposuction at the Milwaukee area’s Parkins Plastic Surgery to help slim problem areas where exercise-resistant fat persists, despite their best efforts. Dr. Maida Parkins offers fat-removal procedures customized to create the shape you’re looking for, so you can feel confident in your figure.

What Makes a Good Liposuction Candidate?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, so it works best for patients who have isolated bulges or specific areas that are bulkier than desired. Generally, candidates should be at or within about 30 pounds of their ideal weight for their height. Understanding your BMI before your consultation will help determine your eligibility for surgery.

While exercise and healthy eating are important for good health, they are not effective when it comes to spot reduction of problem areas. A dieter has no control over which fat cells shrink—even when also participating in routine workouts. It’s hard to fight what’s hereditary: Some otherwise slim patients naturally store fat in their midsections, while others may have wide hips or fat under the chin. Many patients retain fullness in the stomach, hips, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, and below the chin despite disciplined healthy activity and nutrition.

Even successful slimming activities can be undone by fat cells that grow larger again later in life. Surgical fat removal is ideal for body contouring, because liposuction can focus on specific areas, and it physically takes the unwanted fat cells out of the body, so there is no concern of them growing larger again.

Beyond these benefits, liposuction is a patient favorite because of the minimal incisions necessary to achieve results. And while liposuction does require downtime, the rest and recovery necessary are comparatively less than required for more invasive procedures.

What Does Liposuction Involve?

For each liposuction patient, Dr. Parkins takes the following steps:

Anesthesia

Treatment can be completed with either local or general anesthesia, depending on your preferences and the extent of care required to meet your goals.

Incision Placement

A small incision is positioned adjacent to the treatment site. In some cases, several incisions may be necessary, depending on the amount of fat to be removed and how many areas of the body you would like to target.

Pre-Treatment of Fat

Dr. Parkins introduces a tumescent solution into the treatment area through the incisions. She then uses a narrow tube, called a cannula, to break up the fat deposits, making removal much easier. The solution helps to decrease bruising and also contains an anesthetic, which allows for a more comfortable treatment experience.

Fat Cell Removal

Fat cells in the treatment area are suctioned out of the body with a second, smaller cannula. Dr. Parkins uses a gentle back-and-forth motion to thoroughly sculpt the body while removing the desired amount of fat.

After a liposuction procedure is complete, Dr. Parkins closes the incisions, and patients rest for a short time in our office before being released to recuperate in the comfort of their own homes.

What Sets Dr. Parkins Apart for Liposuction Surgery?

Since liposuction is such a versatile procedure, Dr. Parkins can use it to contour any number of areas of the body. By focusing on each patient as an individual—truly listening to their unique goals and carefully examining their contours and proportions—she can create a personalized plan. She approaches all of this with discretion and compassion, helping patients to feel confident in their decision and calm about the surgery.

Recovery and Results After Liposuction

Bruising and swelling are common after a liposuction procedure. You should expect to spend a few days resting at home after surgery. Depending on how many parts of the body were treated with liposuction, you may need to take up to a week away from work and strenuous physical activity.

After treatment, you will wear compression garments to help reduce swelling and allow the soft tissue to successfully retract. Swelling and bruising, which may initially obscure your liposuction results, gradually fade during the healing process. Over the ensuing weeks, you’ll notice results maturing and skin becoming smooth. It’s important to be patient, as swelling persists for several weeks while you recover.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction

Fat cells removed from areas treated with liposuction are gone for good. If you gain weight after your procedure, you can expect your body size to change proportionately. Existing fat cells will expand, but the cells removed will remain gone. You can expect your body to remain shaped and contoured as dictated by your treatment plan.
Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, patients should expect some discomfort during the healing process. However, while you are being treated, you are provided with anesthetic to ensure you can complete your procedure easily. The solution placed at the treatment site to facilitate fat removal also contains an anesthetic, which further increases patient comfort. After your procedure, you will feel sore, but this will resolve as you heal.
Pockets of fat represent only one factor contributing to cellulite. The real culprit behind the cottage cheese look is tight bands below the skin that pull soft tissue downward, creating the appearance of dips and dimples. Even people who are quite thin can have cellulite caused by these bands. That said, larger pockets of fat in the area can make cellulite look more pronounced. Liposuction can help to minimize these issues by reducing the pockets of fat, but the procedure does not fully get rid of any skin dimpling.

Beyond Liposuction at Parkins Plastic Surgery

People who lose significant weight or undergo pregnancy may experience vertical stomach muscle separation, which can create an abdominal bulge. In these cases, a tummy tuck can pair with liposuction to create flatter contours. Some patients may also need skin removal to address sagging and ensure contours are smooth. This can be part of comprehensive body shaping via post weight-loss surgery or a Mommy Makeover.

Aesthetic balance is tricky. While fat in some areas may be unappealing, fullness in other areas can make you look youthful and create the contours you’re looking for. Liposuction is part of the fat grafting process, where cells are taken from areas where they create unattractive bulges, purified, and re-injected in other locations to add desired volume. Popular uses for fat grafting are enhancing the buttocks (a procedure called the Brazilian butt lift), fat transfer breast augmentation, and creating more youthful contours on the face, as an alternative to traditional facial fillers and other cosmetic injectables.
