Gynecomastia Surgery

Male Breast Reduction for the Milwaukee and Madison Area

Feeling out of place, like your physical appearance doesn’t match that of others, can make you feel significantly self-conscious. Men with excess breast tissue and enlarged or puffy nipples have a condition known as gynecomastia. The Milwaukee area’s Dr. Maida Parkins understands that this problem can lead men to feel less masculine and keep them from confidently going shirtless. She treats men in her office on a regular basis and will listen to your goals to help you achieve the contours you desire.

Gynecomastia treatment is possible with cosmetic surgery.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The development of male breasts can occur for many reasons, such as weight gain and hormonal imbalance. Some notice the appearance of breasts during puberty, and while this issue often dissipates through the course of puberty, other individuals notice the effect lingers and persists into young adulthood. Gynecomastia may also be present in patients who take certain medications and those who use steroids.

Breasts can be the result of excess fatty deposits in the area or a surplus of glandular tissue. Both will create localized tissue enlargement, creating the appearance of breasts. In many cases, excess fat is caused by weight fluctuations, and glandular tissue is created by certain drugs and hormone fluctuations.

What Does Gynecomastia Treatment Involve?

Dr. Parkins can use gynecomastia surgery to create smooth and masculine chest contours in one of two primary ways, depending on the extent of the excess tissue and the root cause of the issue.

When breasts are caused by stubborn fat deposits, Dr. Parkins can use liposuction to flatten the chest. After making a small incision, Dr. Parkins places a cannula (thin tube) through which the excess fat cells are suctioned away. Minor or moderate fat deposits in the area can be corrected with liposuction only. If excess skin has developed as the result of significant weight loss or prolonged excess tissue development, Dr. Parkins may need to remove loose skin and reposition the nipple for a natural finished result.

The presence of excess glandular tissue requires re-shaping through surgical removal. Dr. Parkins makes small incisions at the treatment site to carefully create masculine chest contours. This may also include repositioning or resizing the nipple as well.

Your treatment plan is customized through an in-depth consultation with Dr. Parkins. At this appointment, she can evaluate your condition and gain a better understanding of your goals. Understanding your BMI before your consultation will help determine your eligibility for surgery.

Gynecomastia Surgery with Dr. Parkins

Dr. Parkins is well known among her patients for her caring bedside manner. Patients who visit our office feel confident knowing that Dr. Parkins’ goal is to help them look and feel their best, so they don’t have to spend another day second-guessing their appearance. During your initial visit for gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Parkins’ entire team treats you like a valued friend. You can expect the same level of service throughout the whole of your treatment plan as well.

Male breast reduction for gynecomastia is an outpatient procedure. Depending on the extent of the surgical methods required to achieve your desired appearance, you may be scheduled for local or general anesthesia. After recuperating from anesthesia in our AAAASF-certified operating suite office, patients can return home to rest.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Like?

As you rest at home after gynecomastia surgery, you will wear a compression garment, which helps with swelling and inflammation and allows the soft tissue to contract to create flat, firm, and masculine contours. Soreness, tenderness, and bruising are all common in the weeks following gynecomastia surgery.

The first few days, patients require the most amount of rest and may be using medication on a specific schedule set by Dr. Parkins. After the first week of recovery, many patients feel more like themselves and have increased energy. You will be advised to avoid physically straining while your body heals from the procedure. Most gynecomastia surgery patients only take a few days away from work to recuperate.

Follow-up visits with Dr. Parkins allow her to determine the rate of healing and provide recommendations for making the incisions as imperceptible as possible. If your gynecomastia treatment included only surgical fat reduction, you may notice swelling for several weeks after the procedure. However, this will recede with time and use of the compression garment will help.

More Surgical Options for Men

Men who have lost significant weight may be dealing with more than stubborn fat deposits and excess skin on the chest. A tummy tuck can create a flatter, firmer belly, and may be part of general post weight-loss surgery, which can also include an arm lift, thigh and lower body lift, and face and neck lift.
