4 Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep When Recovering from Liposuction

Even if you’re excited about how you’ll look after having liposuction from our Lake Country team, there’s no doubt that the experience of having any kind of surgery can be both physically and emotionally taxing. One of the most critical things you can do during recovery to ensure that you heal properly is get the sleep and rest your body needs. However, plenty of patients sleep poorly because they’re uncomfortable, because they have higher levels of stress hormones, or because of the side effects of the medications that they’ve been taking. After you’ve had liposuction to improve your body contours by removing diet- and exercise-resistant fat from certain spots, we want you to have the easiest and fastest recovery possible. With that in mind, you can follow these tips if post-surgery insomnia is an issue for you.

1. Change Your Medications

It’s possible that the pain medications you’re taking could be keeping you awake, so if you think this is the case, talk to your surgeon about switching to a different type, such as a non-opioid alternative, or changing your dosage or the time when you take them.

2. Use Relaxation Techniques

You will likely experience some significant emotional ups and downs after plastic surgery. If anxiety and stress are preventing you from getting rest, try a relaxation technique right before bedtime, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or guided imagery. This will help to quiet your mind.

3. Cut Out Stimulants

Be mindful about what you’re eating and drinking during recovery if sleep is eluding you. Some foods help sleep, while others are stimulants that make it challenging to fall or stay asleep. Avoid caffeine, high-fat foods, foods that are difficult to digest, and heavy meals right before bed.

4. Make Yourself Comfortable

Noise, light, and temperature could be contributing to your problem. Make sure that your room is cooled to a temperature of around 65°F, ensure that your room is quiet and peaceful, and wear earplugs and a sleep mask if you need to.
