Facelift & Neck Lift

In no other area is aging harder to conceal than on the face and neck. Makeup can help somewhat in creating a youthful aesthetic, but the only way to effectively turn back the clock and look at least a decade younger is through a facelift or necklift. In Milwaukee and Madison, Dr. Maida Parkins provides meticulous surgical treatment to help patients achieve smooth, firm skin around the face and neck that is the hallmark of youth and beauty.

The Benefits of a Facelift

There are many reasons to choose a facelift. Many patients pursue this treatment after having a routine of fillers and BOTOX® for many years and discover that these injectables are not providing enough of a lift to combat deep-set wrinkles and facial sagging. The advantages of a facelift include the following, among many others:

While injectables are temporary, a facelift creates permanent and lasting results; you won’t need a maintenance schedule of procedures to ensure your results are durable.

Aging and gravity create sagging skin over the years, which contributes to heaviness in the midface and jowls. While in youth, collagen production is at its peak, but this slows in advancing years, making skin less resilient and firm. Facelift surgery repositions these delicate soft tissues and improves the underlying muscle support, so you look naturally rejuvenated and results last.

Patients are often worried about what scars will look like in highly visible areas of the face after treatments. Depending on your needs and the extent of facial sagging, incisions are typically placed around the natural lines of the ear and hairline; resulting scars are faint and imperceptible. They will not stand out or detract from your appearance.

Do You Need a Necklift?

Neck lifts are a procedure used to smooth and define your neck profile. Many patients who are interested in a facelift also qualify for a neck lift and love how they look with a combination of both procedures. Of the many tell-tale signs of aging, excess skin and fat on the neck are prominent and difficult to disguise.

You may need a necklift if you have what is commonly referred to as a turkey wattle – wobbly and drooping skin around the neck. This can also manifest as visible neck banding that makes the area look gaunt and aged. Treatment removes this excess tissue and creates improved neck contours.

What to Expect During your Procedure

General anesthesia is typically provided before face and necklift surgery. Dr. Parkins places an incision near the hairline but some incisions can be made behind the ear or at the earlobe. Through these incisions, Dr. Parkins can reposition the underlying SMAS muscles, which support the new position of soft tissue. Excess skin is trimmed at the incision sites.

If the supporting muscles require treatment, an incision may be placed under the chin. With this comprehensive approach, Dr. Parkins can ensure that your treatment is effective and results look as natural as possible. After placing the incisions, Dr. Parkins removes excess skin and some fat from the area, so the resulting profile is smooth and taut.

You will recover from anesthesia in our Lake Country plastic surgery office and will be allowed to return home under the care of a family member or loved one to recuperate at home. Facelifts and neck lifts are outpatient procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions about Facelifts and Neck Lifts

Will the Scars be Visible?

Incision lines are hidden well within the natural hair pattern or around the curves of the ear. They heal well and are very faint – no one will be able to tell you had surgery to achieve your new youthful look. In some cases, the need for incisions is minimal and they may be placed by the ears only. If you have questions about your surgical plan, please be sure to discuss these with Dr. Parkins at your consultation.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Patients can expect to take at least a week away from work. While recovery is well-tolerated, patients are most concerned with their appearance in public, as opposed to discomfort. For the first few days, you will be on a cycle of medication and rest. After two weeks, much of the initial bruising will resolve. Over the next month, as swelling subsides, patients will see their results mature. Depending on your comfort level in working and professional environments, you can be back to your normal routine in seven to ten days, with a limitation in physical exertion to ensure your health and safety.

Will My Results Last?

While a facelift will not change the aging process, it will set back the clock, so you look significantly younger than your years going forward. Results are permanent and depending on when you received your facelift, most patients do not need a second procedure. Repositioning of the facial SMAS muscles supports lasting and appealing results, compared to older facelift techniques where patients looked over-treated and windblown.

Do I Need both a Facelift and a Necklift?

Recommended procedures depend on your goals and the specific areas that are causing concern. Some patients require an eyelid lift or brow lift. The neck is often added as a treatment area to a facelift procedure to comprehensively improve facial profile. If you have significant loose skin around the neck, a facial procedure only may not create the desired effect. The same is true for laxity in the lower face; if only a necklift is performed it can provide an unbalanced result.
