Microneedling and PRP

Give Your Skin a Collagen Boost in the Milwaukee and Madison Area

After years of summer sunshine, laughing with loved ones, and enjoying the best life has to offer, our skin begins to change. At Parkins Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on helping our patients continue to live life to the fullest while feeling their very best. Luckily, when it comes to addressing the signs of aging, science has come a long way. Dr. Maida Parkins and the Parkins Team offer microneedling for Milwaukee-area women and men seeking an advanced way to achieve their aesthetic goals.

Microneedling is one of our most efficient, straightforward, and safe nonsurgical methods of turning back the clock on skin aging. Even better, it requires little to no downtime. The Parkins Team pricks the skin using small, fine needles to target and stimulate collagen production—a proven way to rejuvenate and tighten the skin. This treatment can be enhanced with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is a rejuvenating substance made from healing factors taken from a patient’s own blood.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a nonsurgical medical spa treatment that contours and firms skin on the neck, face, hands, and body. It works by naturally stimulating your collagen (which regulates skin appearance and texture). Best of all, though, it’s painless and downtime-free, and you can get it done at any time of year. You’ll be free to return to work the next day, and no one will notice or guess you’ve had a treatment done.

Your pores will reduce in appearance, and fine lines and wrinkles will soften. Increased collagen production can also help with the appearance of surgical or acne scars and stretch marks.

Patients can expect the following results:

  • Reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Tighter skin
  • Smaller-looking pores
  • Improved overall skin texture and tone
  • Fast results (pain- and downtime-free)
  • Acne relief

Each treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes. If you want to treat larger or multiple areas, treatment time can vary. Results tend to show within a few days of treatment, continuing to improve for several weeks as the body’s collagen naturally regenerates. Some patients opt for multiple treatments throughout the year to see the most significant cosmetic benefits.

What Is PRP?

As a complement to microneedling, PRP yields beautiful results. Dr. Parkins’ team creates the PRP for rejuvenating treatments by withdrawing a small amount of blood from a patient, then spinning the blood in a centrifuge. This motion causes fragments of cells, known as platelets, to collect in one group, instead of remaining suspended throughout the liquid.

Platelets are key players in clotting and wound closure, making them a vital part of any healing process. By concentrating them to create a platelet-rich plasma, their healing properties can be focused onto a specific area.

Since microneedling creates tiny holes in the surface, the skin much more readily absorbs elements applied topically. Dr. Parkins can takes advantage of this by spreading the PRP over skin just treated with microneedling, allowing the concentrated platelets to penetrate and begin their rejuvenating work.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy. With the help of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body, microneedling effectively rejuvenates the appearance of your skin. Aside from the signs of aging, triggering the body’s natural repair and healing systems can reduce:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Scars resulting from surgery or injury

You can get microneedling beyond the face, too. Patients can see improvement in the neck, arms, legs, back, abdomen, and hands as well.

Microneedling vs. Laser Treatments

Though both lasers and microneedling work to provide age-defying results, they use different technology and target different tissues. Laser treatments use light energy to affect hyperpigmentation. As such, these treatments are best suited to dealing with broken blood vessels, discoloration of the skin, and spider veins. Microneedling, on the other hand, creates thousands of tiny, column-shaped injuries, known as microchannels, triggering the body’s natural healing response.

Microneedling treats the entire skin area, promoting skin cell turnover and collagen rejuvenation, whereas lasers target specific areas. Some of the benefits of microneedling include:

  • Low risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring
  • Safer for darker skin tones than most laser-based rejuvenation options
  • Suitable for sensitive and thin skin types
  • Cost-effective
  • Safe for use on areas where laser resurfacing or chemical peels may not be, such as around the lips and eyes
  • Leaves the outermost layers of skin intact
  • Long-term results thanks to collagen building

Preparing for a Microneedling Treatment

Before you come into the Parkins Plastic Surgery office for a microneedling treatment, there are some essential steps to take. Avoid Retin-A and alpha-hydroxy products, as well as auto-immune therapies, for 12 hours before your treatment. It’s also best to avoid taking any aspirin and to steer clear of direct sun exposure for the 24 hours leading up to the procedure. We will not be able to perform microneedling on sunburned skin.

The Microneedling Procedure, Recovery, and Possible Side Effects

If you are combining PRP with microneedling, Dr. Parkins’ nurse will withdraw the necessary blood and prepare it for application.

We’ll apply a topical numbing cream before your procedure to aid comfort.

Depending on your choice of treatment, PRP will be applied after a sufficient number of microchannels have been made in the skin.

Following your treatment, your skin will look a bit red and may feel tingly, warm, and tighter than normal. These are all normal side effects, and they subside on their own one or two hours following your session. Some slight redness may persist in minimal spots or areas for more than 24 hours. This inflammatory reaction, which is a crucial part of the rejuvenation process, tends to be short-term and significantly fades after a few days. Some patients with very sensitive skin may take upwards of a week before fully recovering.

Microneedling FAQs

Generally, you can expect to see results about 48 to 72 hours after your first microneedling session, thanks to protein enzymes that produce collagen spiking. More significant results become visible over time.

To see the maximum improvement, we recommend three to six treatments, spaced several weeks apart. Throughout the course of your treatments and the following six to 12 months, your skin will continue to improve. New collagen usually lasts for at least several years, which sets microneedling apart.

Be sure only to use tepid water (never hot) when cleansing the area for at least the first 48 hours after your treatment. Dry the area very gently without rubbing. We also recommend avoiding touching the treated area. If you need to, be sure to wash your hands first to avoid possible infections.

Avoid wearing makeup for at least 12 hours after your session, ideally until the following morning. We highly recommend only using mineral-based makeup after microneedling, as it provides natural SPF, which can aid the healing process.

We’ll provide you with in-depth care instructions and product recommendations during your consultation or at the time of your treatment.
